The President James K. Polk Home & Museum, located at 301 West 7th Street in Columbia, Tennessee, is the presidential museum for the eleventh president of the United States, James K. Polk. It is the sole remaining private mansion of United States President James K. Polk, having been built in 1816.
From 1819 until his marriage in 1824, James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States, lived in this beautiful brick mansion in Columbia, one of Tennessee's best examples of Federal style architecture.
It was the President's last home, when he died of cholera at the age of 53 in 1849. He'd been in the house for a little over a month. His wife stayed there for another 42 years after he died, until she died in 1891. A decade after her death, in 1901, the house was dismantled.
James K. Polk, known as the first "dark horse" President, was the last of the Jacksonians to hold the White House, as well as the last powerful President before the Civil War. In 1795, he was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
