The Battle of Stones River is commemorated at Stones River National Battlefield, a 570-acre site along the Stones River in Rutherford County, Tennessee, three miles northwest of Murfreesboro and twenty-eight miles southeast of Nashville.
Between December 31, 1862, and January 2, 1863, a ferocious fight raged at Stones River. After the engagement, General Bragg's Confederates withdrew, allowing General Rosecrans and the Union forces to take control of middle Tennessee.
The silence came far too soon for many. The fight of Stones River claimed 23,000 lives, making it the Civil War's second worst action west of the Appalachians. The Stones River National Battlefield still stands today as a solemn memorial to those who perished there.
A three-hour tour of the battlefield, including trekking the paths at each location, takes around three hours.
