One popular method used by homeowners to keep their basements dry is sump pumps. Sump pumps are typically installed by homes beneath their basement floors, where water frequently gathers. Sump pumps can, however, be installed almost everywhere where water tends to collect, including in your crawl areas.
Where are sump pumps supposed to go?
The sump pump should be placed near a wall so that the discharge pipe can be readily directed outside and near an electrical outlet so that it can be powered. The sump pump should also be placed in the lowest part of the floor.
In my crawl area, should I install a sump pump?
You should think about purchasing a sump pump if the water in your crawl area accumulates in significant pools or drains slowly. Pumps are not always required, though. You might not even need to install a new pump if your home doesn't flood frequently or if you have backup plans in place, such French drains.
How can you tell if a sump pump is necessary in a crawl space?
You may truly need a sump pump to protect your home if your crawlspace or basement is always wet. If you don't already have one, you should probably think about getting a sump pump if your house is low or below the water table. It can also be a problem if you reside below sea level.
How can water be pumped out of a crawl space?
Placing the pump's suction hose into the floodwater and directing the drainage hose away from the home will help you pump the water out of your crawl space. The water should be released from the drainage hose far enough from the house to prevent re-infiltration into the crawl area. Turn on the pump, then let it run.
Does it matter where a sump pump is placed?
Your basement's lowest point should have your sump pump basin so that water can flow there naturally. As much as possible, rely on your vision, and then use a level to check that the area slopes downward.
