The Carter House State Historic Site is a historic house in Franklin, Tennessee, located at 1140 Columbia Avenue. The Carter family sheltered in the basement of that house while waiting for the second Battle of Franklin to end. The Battle of Franklin Trust, a non-profit organization, manages the Tennessee Historical Commission State Historic Site under an agreement with the Tennessee Historical Commission.
Tod Carter, Fountain Branch Carter's middle son, was fatally wounded in the battle. When he was discovered and taken to the house the morning after the battle, he was still alive.
The house was erected for Randal McGavock, a surveyor, State Supreme Court clerk, and former mayor of Nashville. The McGavock family lived at Carnton for three generations. When Randal's father died in 1843, his son, John McGavock, inherited the house.
The Battle of Franklin raged over the fields south of town on November 30, 1864, scarring the landscape, claiming the lives of thousands, and forever altering life on the Carter Farm. Tod Carter, the son of Fountain Branch Carter, was gravely wounded in the battle near his childhood home and died two days later.
