The zoo was middle Tennessee's most popular paid attraction in 2014, with 6,230 animals representing 339 species. The zoo's land area is roughly 188 acres. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has granted it accreditation.

The Nashville Zoo first opened its doors in Cheatham County in the early 1990s, and in 1998 it relocated to its current home on Nolensville Pike in South Nashville. The Nashville Zoo at Grassmere was renamed.
